TAMPA — Florida Gov. Rick Scott has appointed civil engineer Hung Mai to replace Mike Griffin on the board of Port Tampa Bay.
Mai, 68, of Lutz is president of H.T. Mai Inc. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Saigon and is a member of the Tampa Bay Aviation Association. He previously served on the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission. If confirmed by the Florida Senate, Mai will fill a term ending Nov. 15, 2019.
Scott appointed Griffin, then the chairman of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, to the board in August 2017 in response to news reports about questionable spending by port employees on meals and entertainment. Griffin resigned in July, saying the port had put policies in place to prevent such problems in the future and that he wanted to work on bringing the Tampa Bay Rays to Tampa and plans to consolidate the University of South Florida's campuses.
