Capitol Buzz: 5 things to watch today in Tallahassee

Published March 24, 2014

Shhhh!!! It's Library Day at the Capitol. But today's agenda also includes more trauma center discussion, beer tastings, guns and more. Here's what to watch:

  • Trauma centers, and the activation fees they charge seriously injured patients, are up for discussion at the Senate's Health Policy Committee, which will consider SB 1276.
  • The Senate Education Committee takes up a hot-button charter school bill that would require local school districts and charter school operators to use a standardized contract, SB 1528.
  • A proposal to allow Floridians complying with a mandatory evacuation to carry concealed weapons, SB 296, is up for consideration in the Senate's Military and Veterans Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security Committee.
  • Claims bills have been a non-starter in the Senate because President Don Gaetz believes the process is too arbitrary. That didn't stop the House's Civil Justice Subcommittee from putting three on the agenda: HB 3519, HB 3529 and HB 3531.
  • The Senate's Community Affairs Committee will consider a proposal that will allow retailers to hold in-store beer tastings, SB 470.
