Bank employee’s finger burned by suspicious package, Clearwater police say

The package was left by a former employee, police say.

CLEARWATER — A bank employee was burned Monday by a substance on a package left by a former employee, according to Clearwater police.

The incident took place at Centennial Bank at 26417 U.S. 19 N. The bank was evacuated at about 2 p.m. after the male employee’s finger was burned, police said.

The Pinellas County hazardous materials team was dispatched to the bank and took charge of the package. It will be turned over to the FBI, which will continue the investigation. No other details about the substance were released by police.

The male employee, whom police did not name, was treated and released at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

As a precaution, the bank’s nine employees were evacuated to another business while the package was investigated.

No other information about the incident were released by police.
