CLEARWATER — A 22-month-old girl died Thursday night, days after her parents found her in their backyard pool.

The parents of Lanita Vasilivena Bykov found her in their pool Monday, according to Clearwater Police. Both parents were at their house, west of US-19 and near Belleair Road, when they lost sight of the girl.

Bykov was taken to Morton Plant Hospital and later transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. She died in the hospital Thursday night, police said.

In June, a 2-year-old Pasco County boy drowned in a pool while his grandfather went to use the bathroom.

Hillsborough County leads the state in the number of child drownings, with 11 total last year.

This year, the Hillsborough County Children's Board committed an extra $140,000 to bring swim instructors to low-income communities.

Pinellas County's Forensic Science Center says swimming lessons for kids under age 4 reduce the chance of drowning by 88 percent, and that drowning can begin in 20 seconds in only 1 inch of water. It is the leading cause of death for children age 1 to 4, their website says.
