Vote on Clearwater condo fought by neighbors pushed to June due to city clerical error

Residents around the Edgewater Drive property are fighting the condo for its height but also question assurances from developers, who are Scientologists, the project isn't controlled by Scientology.

CLEARWATER — The Community Development Board's hearing scheduled for Tuesday on a controversial 7-story condo on Edgewater Drive proposed by developer Moises Agami has been pushed to June 18 because of a noticing error by the city.

Although all homeowners living within 200 feet of the proposed project were notified prior to Tuesday's scheduled meeting, the homeowners association was not alerted by mail as required by city code, according to City Clerk Rosemarie Call. Two other hearings scheduled for Tuesday for projects on Gulf to Bay Boulevard and Eldorado Avenue were also postponed because their respective homeowners associations were not notified.

An employee in the city clerk's office realized the error on Monday morning, Call said.

Neighbors around Agami's property, a vacant lot near the corner of Sunset Point Road and Edgewater Drive, have organized a staunch campaign against the 80-unit, 86-foot tall proposal for its height and impact on surrounding one-and two story homes. They have also questioned assurances from the developers, who are Scientologists, that the project is not tied to the Church of Scientology.

This condo would be the second residential project in Clearwater by Agami, CEO of Valor Capital, and his father-son partners Elias and Diego Jafif. The developers also built the SkyView on Cleveland Street.
