Nancy joined the Times in 1981 as a copy editor. She then worked as a reporter in the Pasco Bureau before moving to become Homes editor in 1985. After that, she was the assistant newsfeatures editor, newsfeatures editor, then AME/newsfeatures before moving to her current position. As the Director of Corporate Giving she is responsible for internships, scholarships and grants. She is also Director of the Tampa Bay Times Fund Inc. and ensures that the company’s philanthropic objectives are met.
Nancy graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University with her bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1976. She also did some post-graduate study at the University of Illinois Chicago.

After graduating from
Indiana, Nancy joined Paddock Publications in Arlington Heights, Ill., as a copy editor. She moved to Florida in 1981 to join the Times. As a general reporter she covered stories ranging from city government to education to health. As assistant managing editor/newsfeatures she had overall responsibility for all the Times’ features sections including the daily Floridian, weekly Taste, Homes, Weekend, and Travel sections. In 1999, she helped launch the Barnes Scholarship program, which annually awards up to $15,000 a year for four years to outstanding high school seniors for their college expenses. The winning scholars come from throughout the Times’ readership area and are selected based upon their academic promise, demonstrated financial need and their having overcome significant obstacles in their lives.
