Pat Farnan came to the Times in 1987 as an assistant city editor and has worked for more than 20 years in a variety of editing positions, including metro editor and assistant managing editor for breaking news. He was named assistant managing editor/digital in January 2012 and continues to oversee the NOW! desk, which focuses on getting breaking news to readers as soon as possible.
Pat graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
After working for the wire services and his college newspaper, he put his experience to work by taking a job as an assistant golf pro at Pocassett Country Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The next three years were consumed by wanderlust.
Pat formally began his professional career in 1977 as a reporter with the Morning Sun in Mount Pleasant, Mich. He also worked as an editor and reporter at the Grand Rapids Press, the Irving Daily News and the Dallas Times Herald.
Pat is divorced and has a son, Sam.
