About The Times Fund
The Times has served residents of west-central Florida since 1884. Its mission is to provide readers with information to help them govern their lives and the communities in which they live and work. The Times also has a strong commitment to serving the public good through its philanthropy.
Paul Poynter, who bought the newspaper in 1912, believed in being a leader in contributing to worthy local projects. His son, Nelson, followed his example, giving back generously to the communities that supported his enterprises. Since Nelson Poynter's death in 1978, his successors have continued that tradition of philanthropy through grants for local nonprofits and through college scholarships.
In January 2003, the Times Publishing Co. placed all of its philanthropy under the umbrella of its nonprofit Fund. Called The Poynter Fund when it was established in 1953, the nonprofit organization 501(c)3 was established to encourage and financially assist students interested in journalism. It has had several names over the years: The St. Petersburg Times Scholarship Fund (1991), The St. Petersburg Times Fund Inc. (2003) and now the Tampa Bay Times Fund (2012).
Times Publishing includes the Tampa Bay Times, tampabay.com, tbt*, tb-two*, Tampa Bay Newspapers Inc., Florida Trend magazine and the Senior Living Guides.
