One of the most intriguing artists in Florida these days is a kid named Marcel Everett, an Orlando DJ/producer who goes by the name XXYYXX. We say "kid" because Everett most certainly is that — he's all of 16, yet is getting buzz from around the web, and in September he'll perform at the City Arts and Music Project in London. He's already drawing comparisons to Flying Lotus, James Blake and J. Dilla.
But you still have time to catch some of his lush beats while he's still in Florida. So far in 2012, he's released nearly an EP a month, showcasing styles that range from loopy and ominous (Mystify) to dreamy and surreal (Dolor). He also shows real commercial promise, as proven by his percussion-driven remix of Waka Flocka Flame's Hard In Da Paint. But if you really want a taste of what he's about, check out his self-titled album, released in March.
On Tuesday, XXYYXX will open for Beat Connection at the Orpheum in Tampa. Doors open at 7 p.m.; tickets are $9-$11. Click here.
