Tbt*'s Susan Thurston reports the Stadium Green Iguana and its neighboring Hawaiian Village concert and party venue are closing this week. The last event at the club is a concert by rappers Tech N9ne and Machine Gun Kelly on Wednesday. A July 7 show by reggae artist Luciano will likely be moved to Jannus Live in St. Petersburg. Click here for the details.
It's an abrupt end to a venue that at one point seemed poised to become Tampa's own version of Jannus Live -- an open-air, anything-goes oasis for hard rock, hip-hop, reggae and electronic music. Among the acts that have played the Hawaiian Village since it opened in 2010: Korn, Anthrax (above), Rise Against, A Day To Remember, Insane Clown Posse, GWAR, Buckcherry, Paul Oakenfold, Rick Ross, Toots and the Maytals, Uncle Luke, Puddle of Mudd and more.
Jannus Live stands, potentially, to benefit the most from the Hawaiian Village's closure -- it's an outdoor venue where some of these acts have played before. The Ritz Ybor could pull in a few, as could the reopened USF Sun Dome.
Could this be part of the reason Blondie and Devo canceled their September show at the Hawaiian Village? Maybe they knew something we didn't.
