Man lands in jail after plan to save beach with plastic gun goes awry

Michael James Lee has an odd way of promoting ecology.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that a deputy responded to reports Monday of a man in Vilano Beach waving a gun in the air and saying that he was going to "save the beach," according to an arrest affidavit from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

When the deputy found the man, later identified as Michael James Lee, he was reportedly on his bike in the middle of the intersection waving the gun. The 45-year-old St. Augustine man hadn't noticed the deputy approaching until the deputy ordered him to show his hands, according to the arrest affidavit.

Lee said, "Oh s**t, I'm sorry, it's fake, plastic, don't shoot me", at which time he grabbed the "handgun" by the barrel and threw it onto the grass shoulder of the road, the report stated. Lee was unable to provide the deputy with any reason as to why he was riding around in the roadway waving the gun, according to the report. Lee was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
