When WFTS-Ch. 28 news director Doug Culver told colleagues at Tampa's ABC affiliate he was leaving in two weeks, it was with an odd caveat: He couldn't actually say where he was going.
But the mystery was lifted Wednesday, when Washington D.C. ABC affiliate WJLA-TV announced Culver would be joining their staff as news director on July 9.
Culver had worked at WJLA as a freelance executive producer back in 2008, just before he came to WFTS, and worked under current WJLA general manager Bill Lord at stations in Los Angeles and Seattle.
"I am thrilled to be joining the teams at ABC7/WJLA-TV and News Channel 8. Both operations have well-deserved reputations for significant local journalism and top notch reporting on all platforms" says Culver in a new release circulated by WJLA. "There's no more exciting place to work and live than the D.C. area, especially in an election year. I can't wait to get started."
Washington D.C. is the nation's 8th-largest TV market; Tampa-St. Petersburg ranks 14th.
WFTS staffers learned Culver would be leaving last week; if the timetable he announced then is still accurate, he'll be leaving the station after this week.
Culver hasn't returned phone calls seeking comment.
