Another teaser trailer has surfaced online for The Master, a movie believed to be inspired by the early days of Scientology, and its founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Unlike the first trailer, Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman appears as Lancaster Dodd, leader of a movement called The Cause resembling Scientology in beliefs and methods, based on an early draft of the screenplay. Dodd is shown questioning the first trailer's star Joaquin Phoenix, playing a troubled U.S. Navy veteran: "Why all the stalking and sneaking?" Dodd asks. "You've wandered from the proper path, haven't you?" Later, Phoenix's character exclaims to Dodd: "I know you're trying to calm me down but just say something that's true!"
Neither Scientology representatives nor writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights) have commented on any thematic connection between the church and the movie.
The Master is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 12.
