North Suncoast's big games: Who you got?

Published Nov. 15, 2012

Lots of big games in the North Suncoast this week.

Pasco-Fivay. Springstead-Hernando. Nature Coast-Mitchell. Sunlake-Land O'Lakes.

I'm posting a quick breakdown of each game below, and I've got my mind made up on two of them. Convince me on the rest. Who will win – and why?

Why Pasco will win: The Pirates have the state's top defense and a dangerous ground game.

Why Fivay will win: The Falcons have the county's top rusher, Davion Sutton, and a very talented offense that will test the Pirates.

Why Springstead will win: That's all the Eagles (7-0) know how to do. They're very disciplined, and they find new ways to win each week. Don't forget about their defense, either.

Why Hernando will win: The Leopards will have the best player on the field, Tyrail Hawkins, plus a few relentless pass rushers. And their D isn't too bad, either.

Nature Coast-Mitchell

Why NCT will win: Matt Breida is Tampa Bay's No. 2 rusher and has the speed and shiftiness to change games. The Sharks' defense is clicking, too, after a strong showing against Land O'Lakes.

Why Mitchell will win: The Wing-T is tricky to prepare for and hard to defend. With Dan Barber and Christian Trinidad (among others), the Mustangs have enough offensive weapons to give NCT trouble.

Sunlake-Land O'Lakes

Why Sunlake will win: Eddie Burgos stars on both sides of the ball, and the Seahawks will be fired up after a close loss to Hernando. Sunlake responded from its only other loss this year by blowing out Mitchell the next week.

Why Land O'Lakes will win: The Gators are due. Does anyone really think Land O'Lakes will lose six games in a row? Plus RB Harrison Wood is finally getting back into his groove after a shoulder injury.

So convince me on these games. Who are you picking – and why?
