The Rays return home from an eventful - and emotional - weekend in Boston to start a three-game series with the White Sox.
They made a move before the game, activating C Jose Lobaton (sore right shoulder) off the disabled list, and optioning C Chris Gimenez to Triple-A Durham. Lobaton, who was put on the DL April 15, said he was excited to be back, considering he was thinking originally it'd just be a week, and "felt" like a year. Lobaton said he's been throwing well, and while he was struggling a little offensively at Triple-A Durham, he feels good. He will be the designated hitter today.
Maddon said they just need to get Lobaton out there often so he can be more consistent with the bat. Maddon said Gimenez did really well in his stint with the Rays, he just has to work on more situational hitting aspects down with the Bulls.
*The Rays boast an interesting lineup, with Maddon choosing to rest left-handed hitting Carlos Pena, Luke Scott and Matt Joyce today against tough lefty Chris Sale. "I wanted to give them a different look," Maddon said. "Playing a tough series in Boston, another lefty on Wednesday, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to rest guys against this guy, and I really believe that this group that's going to go out there today is going to play a great game."
This willl be Sutton's first big-league start at first base, though he has some experience there both in the majors (five games) and minors (31). Sutton said the key is knowing where he should be on cut offs and bunt plays, that the balls off the bat are similar to when he plays third.
*It looks as though OF Desmond Jennings (left knee sprain) may not return until late next week at the earliest. Jennings did some outfield drills today and looked good, but he has to run the bases and slide before beginning a rehab stint, which Maddon said would last around a week. Maddon said Jennings could start the rehab Wednesday or Thursday potentially.
*RHP Kyle Farnsworth (right elbow strain) threw 25 pitches, all fastballs, today in a bullpen session, looking and feeling good. Farnsworth was pleased he was able to repeat his delivery, and finish his pitches, something Maddon felt was encouraging. He'll throw 30 pitches Wednesday, mixing in his cutter, and is still targeting a return the third week of June.
*3B Evan Longoria continued his progress, fielding ground balls and hitting. There's still no update on the timetable of his return.
