Detzner tells counties that updated voter database 'ready to go'

Published Jul. 28, 2015

Secretary of State Ken Detzner's office is telling Florida's 67 election supervisors that updated hardware on the state voter database is "ready to go live." An alert from Division of Elections Director Maria Matthews went out Monday evening after details emerged of a critical state audit of the agency's management of the Florida Voter Registration System (FVRS). In addition, county election supervisors, who have repeatedly criticized Detzner for a lack of communication, called the audit findings "troubling."

Supervisors also struck a more cooperative tone in response to the state's action. Pasco County Supervisor Brian Corley, president of the supervisors' statewide association, said: "The FVRS hardware update is obviously welcomed by the supervisors of elections as the upgrade should provide a more stable platform going forward and we look forward to working with the Department of State on the software refresh."

The full text of Matthews' email to supervisors follows.

Dear Supervisors:

On behalf of Secretary Detzner, we are pleased to announce that the newly installed hardware for FVRS is functional and ready to go live. As you know, we expedited our timeline to have this completed in July. We have appreciated your partnership with us in this endeavor.

As the first step in the migration to the new production system, please be aware that tomorrow evening beginning at 7 p.m. (Eastern), Tuesday, July 28, we will take the training database offline to complete its upgrades. At no point will this downtime affect SOE access to the current production system. The training database is a mirror image of the production system which will allow for the testing of SOE connectivity and functionality to the new hardware.

We will let you know via email on Thursday morning when the training database is back online. We ask for your assistance in testing the connections and look forward to any feedback.

The final step in the migration to the new production system will be handled during the scheduled maintenance window of July 31-Aug. 3.

On Monday, Aug. 3, the FVRS production site will be available on the new system.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation in testing the system and your support.
