Maybe we're all a bit jaded about seeing our '80s heroes earning paychecks for TV commercials these days. But who can't help but smile to learn this news: Swedish rockers Europe finally landed a No. 1 hit on the Billboard charts, thanks to a GEICO commercial.
The band's cheese-tastic performance of their signature hit The Final Countdown has been the chart-topper on Billboard's Hard Rock Digital Songs for three straight weeks now. In case you're wondering, The Final Countdown only reached No. 8 on the U.S. charts when it was released in 1986 (though it was No. 1 on the charts in more than a half dozen countries around the world.) The band's highest ranking song in the U.S. had been Carrie, which reached No. 3 back in 1987 (and yet wasn't nearly as popular outside the U.S. Go figure.)
GEICO seems to enjoy giving a second life to '80s acts. In 2014, Salt-n-Pepa's 1987 hit Push It was also featured in a TV commercial for the insurance company.
