5 things to do in April-May

1 Playtime: American Stage in the Park presents the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights at Demens Landing Park, First Avenue S and Bayshore Boulevard SE, in downtown St. Petersburg, beginning today. The annual event is also known for its preshow picnics on the lawn. Performances are at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays through May 17. Ticket options include reserved chair seating, advance purchase and at-the-gate purchase, with prices starting at $13. Pay what you can today and Thursday, which are preview nights. 2 Down by the sea: Enjoy music, seafood and more at the Mad Beach Food Fest, which starts at 6:30 p.m. April 30 and May 1 and 2 p.m. May 2 at 565 150th Ave., Madeira Beach. The festival, held in conjunction with the annual kingfish tournament, includes local restaurant fare, arts and crafts and a boat showcase. Admission is free. Food and drink are additional.

3 A walk through history: Learn about Safety Harbor's pirates, healing waters, Indian burial grounds and the fire that almost destroyed it on a Safety Harbor walking tour. 4 Experience the Divine Miss M: Bette Midler, the woman behind Wind Beneath My Wings and 20-plus albums, is embarking on her first major tour in more than a decade. The 69-year-old will perform old material and new (from late-2014 girl group tribute album It's the Girls) at Amalie Arena, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa, at 8 p.m. May 11. Tickets cost $42 to $207.

5 Florida Orchestra Pops Series: Let Freedom Ring: Celebrate Memorial Day weekend with a performance of Colonel Bogey March, Stars and Stripes Forever and more, plus Yankee Doodle and America the Beautiful sing-alongs and Col. Gregory H. Graves' narration of James Beckel's Gardens of Stone. There will be three concert dates: 8 p.m. May 22 at Carol Morsani Hall at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa; 8 p.m. May 23 at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. May 24 at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater.
