Winner of the week

Paul Manafort. The sometimes Florida man faced a sentence of between 19 to 24 years for financial fraud. He got 47 months, minus the nine months he’s already served. According to the U.S. Sentencing Commission, the average black man facing similar charges is sentenced to an additional nine months. And if these weren’t white collar crimes, the otherwise “blameless” Manafort would have been locked away a lot longer. If you’re Manafort, you’re feeling thankful this week that you’re rich and white.

Loser of the week

Tampa. Not since the early 1970s has the city council of Florida’s third-largest city been all male. History will soon repeat itself after none of the four women city council candidates on Tuesday’s ballot made it to a second round. At a time when more women are being elected than ever at all levels of government, this is a glaring, unwelcome reality.
