Winner of the week: Annette Taddeo. The newly elected state senator from Miami-Dade was widely underestimated, having previously lost two congressional races, a county commission race and 2014 governor’s race as Charlie Crist’s running mate. She’s now one of the Democratic Party’s brightest lights, having won a special election most observers expected her to lose.

Loser of the week : Veteran emergency management professionals.Turns out that experience managing disasters is not all that important in a state constantly under threat from natural disasters. Gov. Rick Scott picked his old campaign aide, 29-year-old Wes Maul to take the helm of Florida’s Emergency Management Division, after the old chief suddenly left with little explanation. Maul had worked at the division for 15 months, which is slightly longer than he worked as delivery associate at Mattress Town of Gainesville, his job before joining Scott’s campaign team.
