Winner of the week

Tom Lee. The Republican state senator from Hillsborough is showing chutzpah as he prepares to run for the GOP CFO nomination against Gov. Rick Scott’s recent appointee, Jimmy Patronis of Panama City. Many politicians would have bowed out as soon as Scott signalled he’s behind Patronis, but don’t bet against a gutsy Republican popular in the all-important Tampa Bay area.

Loser of the week

School choice critics. A new study by the Urban Institute think tank found low-income students in Florida who attend private schools with the help of a controversial, state-approved voucher program are more likely to enroll in and graduate from in-state public colleges than similarly situated peers who stick with public schools.
