Sen. Marco Rubio is in Scottsdale, Ariz., Monday for a fundraiser for Sen. Jeff Flake, who is feeling pressure from the right and left in his re-election bid.
Tickets for the lunch cost $100 and VIP went for $500.
Rubio and Flake were part of the Gang of 8 that produced the 2013 immigration bill, and they serve together on the Foreign Relations Committee. Flake, unlike Rubio, has been a proponent for the diplomatic thaw with Cuba.
Flake has drawn the wrath of conservatives who see him as too moderate, and he’s also battled with President Donald Trump. But Democrats think they can be competitive should Flake emerge from the primary with Rubio’s help.
Flake opened his campaign with a book that targets Trump and lays some blame for his rise on the GOP and a general feeling among the electorate that politics did not work in their favor.
"Who could blame the people who felt abandoned and ignored by the major parties for reaching in despair for a candidate who offered oversimplified answers to infinitely complex questions and managed to entertain them in the process?"
