Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics

Two winners this week.

Winner of the week 1

Susan MacManus. The venerable USF political scientist is retiring from teaching next year, but you can count on her remaining a go-to quote and source for reporters eager to understand Florida politics.

Winner of the week 2

Stephen Bittel. The state Democratic Party chairman could have kept his distance from St. Petersburg's mayoral race that a few months ago looked like an uphill battle for Democratic incumbent Rick Kriseman. But the state Democratic Party opted to throw its name and support behind Kriseman and helped give beleaguered state Democrats ample reason for optimism heading into 2018, have won fiercely competitive races in Miami-Dade and Pinellas in the past few months.

Loser of the week

Rick Scott. The likely candidate for U.S. Senate has super-glued himself to President Donald Trump. Based on election results last week from St. Petersburg to Virginia to Maine, that's a precarious place to be.
