Senate delays taking up gun bill, calls for Saturday session

Published Mar. 2, 2018

The Florida Senate won't be taking up its massive gun and school safety bill today, deciding instead to postpone it for an unusual Saturday morning floor session.

"Holding a sitting on Saturday is the best option for both working within our existing rules and affording this legislation the serious time and consideration it deserves," Senate President Joe Negron, R-Stuart, said in a statement.

The Senate was set to pick up the sweeping legislation, created in response to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month, this afternoon. The bill has several controversial proposals, including a program that would arm some teachers, and Democrats have filed dozens of amendments to the bill to ban assault weapons and create stronger background checks.

The Senate is scheduled to be in session from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and can be live-streamed online on thefloridachannel.org.
