Winner of the week
Mary McLeod Bethune. Gov. Rick Scott signed into law a bill that will place a statue of the educator and civil rights pioneer in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall. A businesswoman and crusader for racial and gender equality, Bethune founded what is today Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach. The daughter of former slaves, will bump out a statue of Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, who had litte connection to Florida.

Loser of the week
John Stemberger. Florida's most prominent social conservative activist last week withdrew his prized proposal to limit privacy rights embedded in the state constitution in order to enact more restrictions on abortion. He lacks the support from enough fellow members of Florida's Constitution Revision Commission.
