Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics

Published April 7, 2018

Winner of the week
Rick Scott. Considering the anti-Trump headwinds Republicans face this election cycle, Gov. Scott is in a remarkably strong position as he prepares to give Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson his toughest challenge in decades. Scott's performance during Hurricane Irma, and his mild bucking of the NRA after the Parkland massacre, have earned the former tea party governor broad-based goodwill from Floridians.
Loser of the week
Ron DeSantis. The Republican gubernatorial candidate so far is running perhaps the most cynical and lily-livered campaign Florida has seen. He avoids talking to Florida-based reporters who might ask him questions about state policy in favor of friendly interviews on Fox News about national issues. And, unlike Richard Corcoran and Adam Putnam, he rarely, if ever, answers questions from Florida voters outside of private events. No guts, no glory, Ron.
