Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics

A court decision that pleased Gov. Rick Scott has upped the stakes for a proposal on the November ballot.

Winner of the week
Rick Scott and his Cabinet. A federal appeals court in Atlanta gave Scott a major political win late Wednesday night when it blocked a decision by a lower federal judge that ordered the state to engineer a new way for restoring voting rights to convicted felons. That means the current system, which can take a decade or more for felons to have their rights restored via a formal hearing with Scott and the Cabinet, will stay in place. That is, unless voters decide to change it via a proposal on November’s ballot.

Loser of the week
People who profit from dead candidates' campaign funds. After an investigation by the Tampa Bay Times/10News WTSP revealed that federal campaign funds continued to spend money after the candidate left office — and even after they died — the Federal Election Commission announced this week it will crack down on the practice. In one example from the investigation, a political consultant was getting paid $100,000 from Hawaii Congressman Mark Takai's account after Takai died.
