‘We know Florida is a target,’ Rubio says in calling for federal election security funds

Florida to get $19.2 million in funding.

WASHINGTON – After Florida finally applied for $19 million in election security funding, Sen. Marco Rubio is giving the effort a nudge.

Rubio, who has said some county elections officials are "overconfident" about threats, urged swift approval in a letter to U.S. Election Assistance Commission Executive Director Brian Newby.

"Florida is the third most populous state in the union, and based on reviews of foreign interference in the 2016 election, we know Florida is a target," Rubio wrote. "Federal, state and local governments must take proactive measures to ensure that any future attempts to interfere with voter databases or election infrastructure are not successful, and that when Americans go to vote they have the upmost confidence that their votes are properly counted."

Rubio met with some election supervisors on Wednesday in Orlando.
