National partisan groups begin tug of war over Andrew Gillum

The Republican Governors Association is out with a new digital ad about Gillum, and the Democratic Governors Association is investing heavily in the Democrat's campaign.

The Democratic and Republican Governors Associations are investing heavily in Andrew Gillum.

The DGA announced Thursday it is donating $1 million to Gillum's political committee, Forward Florida.

"Winning the Florida governor's race is a top priority for the DGA this year," DGA Executive Director Elisabeth Pearson said in a statement. "This significant investment will help Mayor Andrew Gillum build off his inspiring primary victory and continue spreading his positive message across Florida."

Not to be outdone, the RGA is making a different kind of investment in Gillum, hoping to craft a narrative of corruption around the Democratic nominee for Florida governor.

The RGA Thursday released a new digital ad about Gillum, Tallahassee's mayor, who will face Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis in the November general election. The 30-second spot highlights some less-than-flattering headlines about Gillum — including a few about the FBI investigation into Tallahassee's city government.

"Andrew Gillum can't be trusted," the ad's concluding text reads as  ominous classical music plays in the background.

The RGA also announced that, in addition to that ad — part of a $10 million RGA investment in the Florida governor's race — the group launched a website about Gillum Thursday.

The dueling announcements surely won't be the last we'll hear from the DGA and RGA about Gillum.
