Winner of the week
Amendment 4. The ballot initiative to automatically restore the voting rights of ex-felons who have completed their sentences (not murderers or sex offenders) has produced a virtual miracle in today's political climate: Consensus support from both left and right wings. The conservative, billionaire Koch brothers formally joined the likes of Ben and Jerry and the ACLU in supporting the amendment. "In the Sunshine State, Floridians are permanently excluded from voting because of a prior felony conviction — one of only four states with a lifetime ban. If we want people returning to society to be productive, law-abiding citizens, we need to treat them like full-fledged citizens," said the Koch-funded group, Freedom Partners.
Loser of the week Ron DeSantis and Rick Scott. In a state with more than a million Puerto Rican residents, the last thing they need is another offensive Trump tweet like the one denying the deaths of nearly 3,000 Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria. It won't work, but the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidates should beg their pal in the White House to keep his mouth and Twitter account shut for the next few weeks.
