A 1990 Florida Trend cover story that dubbed Sen. Bill Nelson an "empty suit" in Washington continues to dog the candidate nearly three decades later.
New Republican, a political action action committee closely aligned with Nelson's opponent Gov. Rick Scott, released a statewide ad this week with a premise heavily reliant on that story. The ad cycles through Nelson's four decades in office, with a different empty suit for each decade (including a very Miami Vice hot pink blazer for the 1980s).
The ad wields many of the same attacks Scott, a Republican, has levied at Nelson, a Democrat, throughout their heated campaign.
Despite facing tens of millions of dollars of negative ads from Scott, his PAC and other Republican allies, Nelson remains in a statistical tie in his race for a fourth term.
