Democrat Kristen Carlson has far outraised Republican Ross Spano in the race for the Congressional District 15 seat being vacated by Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland.
But Spano's campaign says out-of-state money recruited by liberal interest groups has inflated Carlson's fundraising.
Carlson has raised more than $1.6 million to Spano's $660,508.
Many of her contributions have come through ActBlue, which processes credit card contributions for Democratic campaigns and lists its clients on its website as a guide for donating.
Spano consultant Brock Mikosky said Carlson has raised $928,000 outside the district, not counting PAC contributions.
"It's liberal activists in places like New York and California who for whatever reason are trying to influence the politics in District 15," he said.
But Carlson strategist Conor Hurley said she has raised about $400,000 from inside Florida — "probably more than he has raised in Florida. The polls and fundraising show voters are responding to Kristen's message of making health care affordable and protecting Social Security and Medicare."
