Winner of the Week
U.S. Rep. Greg Steube. This Sarasota Republican is one of five Florida delegation members on the House Judiciary Committee that got to question former special prosecutor Robert Mueller on Wednesday. Steube elicited the “that was outside our purview” answer from Mueller in response to a question about voter behavior being affected by Russian influence on the 2016 election. The freshman congressman is also grabbing headlines for proposed legislation that would ensure no veterans lose benefits over legal marijuana use, a problem vexing many.
Loser of the week
Nikki Fried. As the saga over Ronald Rubin, the state’s top banking regulator, dragged on for months, Florida’s commissioner of agriculture stayed silent. The lone Democrat on Florida’s Cabinet, Fried could have weighed in on allegations of sexual harassment, or how one of her colleagues apparently has weaponized harassment complaints. And then before Thursday’s Cabinet vote to fire Rubin, Fried walked out, saying the topic hadn’t been properly noticed. Reporters chased her down a Capitol hallway as she refused to elaborate on her abrupt answers. She closed a door in their faces. If her beef is that the Cabinet isn’t transparent, being the only member not to stop and take questions doesn’t bolster her case.
