For the Tom Lee seat: It’s Danny Burgess vs. Kathy Lewis

Only two candidates qualified for the Nov. 3 special election.

Only two candidates qualified this week for the Nov. 3 special election to replace state Sen. Tom Lee, R-Thonotosassa: Republican Danny Burgess and Democrat Kathy Lewis.

Burgess is a former state House member from Zephyrhills, currently serving as director of the state Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Lewis, of Wesley Chapel, is a writer and motivational speaker who ran for the seat in 2018, losing to Lee. She also filed but withdrew in a 2019 special election for Burgess’ House seat.

Lee recently announced he’ll leave the seat this fall, with two years left in his term. The special election will be on the general election ballot.

Former Plant City Mayor John Dicks and Alex Sink were among the prominent Democrats who considered entering the race. Support for Burgess from state Senate Republican leadership cleared the GOP field.
