County Commissioner Les Miller is backing Tom Scott in the five-way Democratic primary that’s likely to decide Miller’s replacement in the District 3 commissioner’s seat.
The competitive race has caused worry in the East Tampa black community, where it’s feared the four black candidates — Scott, Gwen Myers, Frank Reddick and Sky White — could split the black vote in the racially diverse district leading to a win for Rick Fernandez and an all-white board of commissioners.
Calls for black voters to unify around one candidate appear to have had little effect, and there doesn’t appear to be a clear frontrunner. Scott, however, has garnered substantial business community support, particularly from the development industry.
Miller cited Scott’s experience in having previously represented the district as commissioner from 1996-2006.
