Nancy Millan wins Hillsborough Tax Collector primary

Early results showed Millan with 61 percent of the vote with challenger April Griffin taking 38 percent.

TAMPA — Nancy Millan was the winner Tuesday night in the Democratic primary race for Hillsborough County Tax Collector.

Early results posted just after 7 p.m. showed Millan drawing 61 percent of the vote with April Griffin taking 39 percent.

Millan is a longtime employee of the Tax Collector’s office, and has spoken favorably of the Republican incumbent, Doug Belden, who is retiring. Although most of her career has been with Belden, she said in a recent candidate forum that she wants to enact her own vision.

“I do have to become an individual,” she said.

Griffin is a former Hillsborough school board member whose history in the local Democratic party drew her the support of prominent party activists. But she trailed Millan in campaign fundraising. Millan also boasted the support of numerous high-profile local Democrats, along with Belden.

Millan will face Republican TK Matthew in the November general election.
