David Price’s beloved French bulldog has died: Five things to know about Astro

He received the key to the city of Tampa and was the subject of several team giveaways. Most of all, he was just good company.

There were times during David Price’s tenure in Tampa Bay when his dog, Astro, seemed a bigger celebrity than the Cy Young-winning pitcher himself.

The French bulldog was a fixture at Price’s side and a social media star in his own right.

He accompanied Price to spring training and made appearances on the field, in the Rays’ dugout and at the team’s FanFest.

He had a custom jersey and bobbleheads made in his likeness.

After Price was traded from the Rays to the Detroit Tigers in 2014, Astro’s name was signed alongside his owner’s at the bottom of the full-page ad Price took out in the Tampa Bay Times.

On Wednesday, the two said a final goodbye.

Price announced on Twitter that Astro has died, writing that his companion “took his last nap today.”

“I knew this day was coming sooner rather than later," Price tweeted, “but it still hurts the same."

Here are five things to know about Astro:

He was named after a TV star

While he shared a moniker with the 2017 World Series champions, Astro’s name had nothing to do with Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros.

Rather, he was named after the family dog from the 1960s animated TV show, The Jetsons.

He once received a key to the city of Tampa

After Price won the American League Cy Young award in 2012, then-Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn declared a day in his honor.

Price and Astro received keys to the city during a ceremony before a couple hundred fans at City Hall Plaza.

He was the subject of several in-game giveaways

The Rays gave away Astro bobbleheads to kids 14-and-under before a 2013 game against the A’s at Tropicana Field.

In 2016, the Red Sox honored Price and his dog with a bobblehead giveaway. Price was immortalized in mid-delivery, with Astro — in a Sox jersey — sitting at his feet.

Astro also had a custom Rays jersey and a superhero action figure.

He had his own Twitter account

While Astro was often the subject of posts on Price’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, the dog had a Twitter account devoted to entirely to himself.

As of Thursday, @Astro_DPsDog had more than 5,000 followers.

Price’s relationship with Astro began when he was staying in a condo in Tampa in 2009, his first full season with the Rays.

"I needed a friend, he told ESPN in a 2016 interview.

He found more than that. In Astro, he gained a “best buddy.”

“He makes me feel good, even after a bad outing,” Price said. “I come home and Astro’s pumped, and I’m like, ‘Sorry, man, I didn’t pitch very well tonight,’ and he doesn’t care.

"He’s always got that love for me. "He’s just my guy.”
