Lockdown lifted on three Hernando schools, district buildings, after deputies sought armed man nearby

BROOKSVILLE — Several Hernando County schools were briefly put under heightened security Tuesday afternoon after the Sheriff's Office reported that deputies were looking for an armed man nearby. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Hernando High School, D.S. Parrott Middle School and Brooksville Elementary were among the buildings affected, according to an automated phone call to parents from the school district about 1:40 p.m. The main district office and the nearby adult education center and exceptional student education office were also under heightened security.

The lockdown had been lifted by 2:20 p.m., a district spokeswoman said.

The man sought by deputies was on foot near the intersection of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Ganz Drive, deputies said. Deputies also asked that residents stay inside and report suspicious activity.
