1. Berkeley Prep (3-0)
This week: Friday vs. Venice
The skinny: The Bucs have not dropped a set in three matches thus far. Unfortunately, last Thursday's match against Palm Harbor University was cancelled due to Hurricane Hermine. But Friday's match against Venice will be a tough test as well. Jenna Hampton leads the Bucs with 20 kills. Anders Douglas has 11 aces and Frances Perez has 32 digs.
2. Palm Harbor University (4-0)
The skinny: PHU swept rival East Lake last week and also had straight-sets wins over Northeast and Pinellas Park. Outside hitter Julia Angelo is back from knee surgery, which forced her to miss the summer club season. Against East Lake, she played an entire match for the first time since the surgery.
3. Plant (3-0)
This week: Saturday at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney/Tallahassee Chiles
The skinny: The Panthers were impressive in a 3-0 win over Newsome. Outside hitter Kaylie Butts will be hard to deal with at the net. Libero Bailey Wilson had 16 digs against the Wolves. Plant is playing a round-robin tournament this weekend that includes Tallahassee Chiles, which should be a good match.
4. Clearwater Central Catholic (8-0)
The skinny: CCC won five matches at the Karl Flammer Ford tournament last weekend to take the championship. Junior Cameron Fitzpatrick was the tournament MVP with 59 kills in five matches. Senior libero Channing Chambers was named to the all-tournament team with 65 digs. Ashten Fulk had 116 assists in the tournament. The Marauders are more experienced this season and so far it is showing.
5. Academy of the Holy Names (2-0)
This week: Wednesday vs. Sarasota Military Academy, Friday-Saturday at AHN Invitational
The skinny: The Jaguars have two sweeps to start the season. As expected, Camille Opp is the leader at the net with 27 kills. Katherine Pickard isn't far behind with 24.
6. Tampa Bay HEAT (2-0)
This week: Thursday at Sarasota Christian
The skinny: Last week, the HEAT swept Cambridge Christian to remain undefeated. Senior Catherine Trueheart leads the team with 30 kills. Sophomore Abigail Casiano has 19 kills and provides setter Allison Rogers with a good second option at the net. Rogers already has 60 assists.
7. Carrollwood Day (1-0)
This week: Friday-Saturday at AHN Invitational
The skinny: The Patriots had a light week due to the hurricane, which cancelled the match at Keswick Christian. This week's tournament should be a good gauge as to where the Patriots are.
8. Wiregrass Ranch (4-0)
This week: Wednesday at River Ridge, Thursday at Steinbrenner
The skinny: Statement made last week by the Bulls after their 3-1 win over Mitchell. A good district match against Steinbrenner awaits this week. The Bulls are very balanced. There are five players with double-digit kills, Caroline Eichelberger, Elanny Breton, Destanie Aydt, Alyson Clark and Kaelin Randle.
9. Clearwater (3-0)
This week: Wednesday vs. East Lake, Thursday at Osceola
The skinny: The Tornadoes were supposed to play three matches last week but got only one in due to the storm. Sophomore Olivia Jones is off to a good start with 21 kills. Junior Hailey Bosetti has 19 kills. East Lake will be the toughest test thus far.
10. Robinson (2-0)
This week: Thursday vs. Spoto
The skinny: The Knights could only play one match last week due to the storm. No matter. Tuesday night they took down Wharton in straight sets as Emily Draper led the Knights with 24 digs.
11. Newsome (3-1)
This week: Wednesday vs. Sarasota Riverview, Thursday at Alonso
The skinny: The loss came last week against Plant. This week is a busy one, with three matches in as many days, though the Wolves topped Plant City 3-0 on Tuesday. Camila Vazquez (kills) and setter Marissa Northrop (assists) are the leaders so far.
12. Calvary Christian (5-2)
This week: Thursday vs. Tampa Catholic
The skinny: Both losses last week were against Clearwater Central Catholic in the Karl Flammer tournament. The second loss was 2-1 in the tournament final. The Warriors have enough experience and depth to make things interesting all season.
13. Mitchell (3-3)
This week: Thursday at Sunlake
The skinny: Rough week for the Mustangs. First there was a four set-loss to Wiregrass Ranch, then two losses in the Karl Flammer tournament, including one to champion CCC. Mitchell hopes to get back on track against Sunlake.
14. East Lake (2-1)
This week: Wednesday at Clearwater
The skinny: The Eagles did not play poorly in their 3-0 loss to Palm Harbor University. They just had a hard time finishing games. Senior outside hitter Danielle Ballou is awfully good, both at the net and in the back. Expect East Lake to get better as the season wears on.
15. St. Petersburg (3-1)
This week: Thursday vs. Indian Rocks Christian
The skinny: The Green Devils have made the transition to new coach Todd Maxwell very well. The lone loss was 3-1 to East Lake. This week should allow St. Petersburg to gain some momentum as district games loom in the future.
16. Shorecrest (3-1)
This week: Thursday-Saturday at Keswick tournament
The skinny: The Chargers picked up two sweeps of Tampa Catholic and St. Petersburg Catholic last week. Now comes another week of good matches for the Chargers. Sophomore Jacqueline St. Cin has been hard to stop, with 73 kills. Senior Nicole Levine is the other part of a one-two punch with 54 kills.
17. Wharton (2-2)
The skinny: Senior Kathyrn Attar remains the top threat at the net. So far, a pair of freshmen, Jeannette Henderson and Jamie Koopman have stepped up. After dropping a three-setter to Robinson on Tuesday, the Wildcats will need all three to be clicking when they take on unbeaten Wiregrass Ranch next week.
18. Steinbrenner (1-1)
This week: Thursday vs. Wiregrass Ranch
The skinny: It doesn't get any easier for the Warriors, who dropped a match to Robinson last week. The young trio of sophomore Morgan Murphy, freshman Maggie Miller and sophomore Lexi Eaves are going to have to continue to play well at the net.
19. Fivay (2-0)
This week: Wednesday vs. Weeki Wachee
The skinny: The Falcons are off to a good start. Seniors Hailey Lake and Taylor Berryhill and junior Kirbea Harrell have provided experience. Wednesday's match against Weeki Wachee will be a good early-season match.
20. Hernando (3-0)
This week: Wednesday at Gulf, Thursday at Lecanto
The skinny: The Leopards beat Citrus on the road last week in their lone match played. Two more road games await, and they might not be that easy. Lecanto is a district match and it is also 3-0.
21. Tampa Catholic (2-1)
This week: Wednesday at Brooks DeBartolo, Thursday at Calvary Christian
The skinny: The Crusaders had an unexpected week off when their match against CCC was cancelled. They will have to be at the top of their game this week, especially at Calvary Christian.
22. Osceola (3-0)
This week: Thursday vs. Clearwater
The skinny: The Warriors haven't been tested yet, but that will change against Clearwater. They have plenty of experience with six seniors and are currently tied with Clearwater in Class 7A, District 9.
23. Weeki Wachee (3-2)
This week: Wednesday at Fivay, Friday at Lake Highland Prep
The skinny: After losing two straight, the Hornets have won three straight, including Tuesday's district match with Central 3-0. As expected, Miranda Werkmeister is the top offensive player with 60 kills.
24. Tarpon Springs (3-0)
This week: Thursday-Saturday Keswick tournament
The skinny: The Spongers currently sit atop the Class 6A, District 11 standings after a 3-0 win last week against Dunedin. The Spongers should be tested at this weekend's Keswick tournament, with a match against Shorecrest on Friday.
25. Keswick Christian (3-3)
This week: Thursday-Saturday at Keswick tournament
The skinny: The Crusaders had two games cancelled last week. This week they will host a weekend tournament. Grace Ball, Emily Gregson and Halee Hannon have emerged as top offensive players.
On the bubble: East Bay, Northeast, Gulf, Cambridge Christian, Ridgewood
