Bishop McLaughlin sophomore Alyssa Mathis has orally committed to play volleyball at San Diego State, Hurricanes coach Doug Chinchar said Thursday morning.

Mathis, a 6-foot outside hitter, also had an offer from Wake Forest and was recruited by Tennessee, among others.

“She still has lots to learn, but the package is there,” said Chinchar, who also coaches Mathis with the No Name Volleyball Club. “The growth from last year to this year was amazing.

“The kid gets it. She sees the dream and is going after it.”

Mathis was a first-team all-North Suncoast (and second team all-Suncoast) selection last fall. She averaged 5.2 kills per set and racked up 66 blocks for the Hurricanes.

San Diego State finished 23-8 last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
