SEFFNER — For the second time in five days — thanks to lightning and thunderstorms postponing last week’s game with Hillsborough — Armwood defeated a Class 6A, District 8 opponent, shutting out Robinson 27-0 on Friday night.

Now the Hawks must beat a third district foe in 12 days.

Next up: Jefferson.

“Next week is the division championship,” Armwood coach Sean Callahan said. “That’s the whole deal right there.”

As for Friday’s game, in which the Hawks overcame 135 yards in penalties and had two touchdowns called back because of infractions, Callahan called it “sloppy,” adding, “It was a setup for us to lose.”

Armwood did not lose, in part, because of a stifling defense that limited the Knights to just 82 yards and sacked Robinson quarterback Travis Forehand six times and intercepted him twice. On one of those picks, Aaron Covington returned the ball 47 yards for a touchdown.

A fake punt attempt in the first quarter backfired on Robinson when Brandon Peters was stopped short of a first down on his team’s 29-yard line. Four plays later, Caylan Holloway ran 12 yards up the middle for the only touchdown Armwood needed.

With 34 seconds left in the first half, Sterling Hoffrichter kicked the first of his two field goals, a 42-yarder for a 10-0 lead.

Quarterback Noah Johnson scored on a 1-yard bootleg and Hoffrichter added a 33-yard field goal in the second half.
