DURANT — No one was spoiling Durant’s homecoming Friday night, as the Cougars shut out Gaither 26-0 for their first victory of the season.

Durant, now 1-4 after going 10-0 last season, rode a strong defensive effort to victory, holding Gaither (2-3) under 200 yards of offense.

“Our defense stepped up tonight, putting up a goose egg” said defensive end Dontriel Perry, who had four sacks.

Durant started off with a 44-yard completion from Trey VanDeGrift to Garrett Rentz down to Gaither’s 1-yard line, and Kadarius Griffin finished off the short drive with a touchdown.

The Cougars scored on a 38-yard field goal by Derrick Wells to make the lead 10-0, capping a 10-play drive in the third quarter.

Griffin added another touchdown, from 8 yards out, and the Durant defense came up with a score as Gabe Brown returned an interception to make it 24-0.

Mason Bridges also had an interception for the defense, which provided the last two points of the night with a sack for a safety.
