2010 St. Petersburg Times' North Suncoast baseball player of the year Ian Townsend will sign on Tuesday with St. Johns River Community College according to his father Phil Townsend.

Townsend, a two-sport athlete, batted .473 with 44 hits, 35 runs, 26 RBIs and ten doubles as a junior to help Hernando reach the Class 4A region finals. He decided to forgo football this season to concentrate on baseball.

Townsend plans to spend two years at St. Johns River, where he will meet up with former Hernando head coach Donnie Whitehead, who is currently an assistant coach for the Vikings. Townsend, a key senior this season for what is anticipated to be another strong Hernando squad, is hoping to get selected in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time at St. Johns River.
