Hudson has found its next girls basketball coach.
The Cobras hired Leslie Speakman to lead the program, athletic director Keith Newton said in an email Thursday.
“I’m very excited about that,” Speakman said.
Speakman played basketball for four years at Hernando before graduating in 1992. She always planned to get into coaching when she became a high school teacher.
“I’ve finally gotten myself in a position to do that,” said Speakman, who is in her first year as a social studies teacher at Hudson.
Speakman hasn’t been a high school coach before but has experience coaching youth teams.
She inherits a Hudson team that’s had talent but has been plagued with turnover. The Cobras finished 2-22 this winter.
“I think we just need to start with small goals and work up from there,” Speakman said. “It’s not gonna happen overnight.”
