NEW PORT RICHEY — Despite the incredible effort by Hernando running back D’Angelo Fagin, the efforts of junior running backs Chris Schwarz and Patrick Cook proved to too much for a gassed Leopard defense Friday night. What happened next might be the greatest comeback Ryan Benjamin had ever seen as the coach at his alma mater. River Ridge, down by 10 at one point, came back to win 37-32. Just don’t tell the Royal Knights that it was a preseason game.
Key drive: Only down by three points with 4:22 remaining in the game, River Ridge turned to Schwarz and Cook to pound the rock and take time off the clock. No matter what the situation, the running back duo kept their legs moving on the winning 11-play drive, which was capped off by Schwarz’s 8-yard TD run.
Stars of the game: Of Hernando’s 197 yards on the ground, 89 of those came from Fagin; he also had a 46-yard touchdown reception.
Stat of the game: After only running for 78 yards in the first half, River Ridge ended the game with 313 yards on the ground.
