Springstead senior captain Haleigh McDuff has signed with the University of West Alabama in Livingston.
The Division II program offered the standout midfielder a combination academic and athletic scholarship to cover her financial needs.
McDuff helped the Eagles to a 13-5-2 record last season, despite a stretch where the team lost three of four games because she was out with a hamstring injury. McDuff finished with career highs in goals (11) and assists (15) before being named to Times’ all-North Suncoast second team.
“We were a different team with Haleigh out there,” Springstead coach Scott Wern said. “She did a tremendous job of distributing the ball on our attack.”
She started all four seasons on varsity for Springstead, switching from defense to midfield after her freshman year. She tallied 25 goals and 32 assists in an Eagles uniform.
She will join a West Alabama program that went 11-8 last season. Tigers coach Graeme Orr enters his fifth season since being hired from his assistant position at North Alabama.
Last season, there were no Florida natives on the roster, and only nine of the 21 players were from the United States. Orr, a Scotland native, does a solid job of recruiting from the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.
