Skyway Bridge closes as Eta nears Tampa Bay

Wind speeds were 50 mph at the bridge, the Highway Patrol said.

The Florida Highway Patrol closed the Skyway Bridge late Wednesday morning as Hurricane Eta edges closer to Tampa Bay.

With wind speeds above 50 mph and set to increase, the Highway Patrol decided to close the bridge and advised people to seek alternate routes. No information was immediately available about when it would reopen.

The Highway Patrol advises people to not drive on flooded roads, to keep headlights on, reduce speed and increase following distance.

Tampa Bay can expect tropical-force winds this afternoon, overnight and into Thursday. A tornado watch is currently in effect.
