Jeff Lynn of St. Petersburg walks through water on Sunshine Drive South, one of St. Petersburg’s pink streets, at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Lynn lives a block away and said the water had receded a lot since the morning, when it was up to his knees and he paddled boarded the street until the current got too strong. No homes in the area appeared to have flooded, Lynn said, but he was worried about the coming high tide.

Just before high tide on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, Nicholas Holman, 29, walked across 22nd Ave. S., toward the beach, to see how far he could get. At 30th Ave. S., three blocks from Boca Ciega Bay, police blocked Beach Blvd. because of flooding. Holman took off his sneakers, waded through ankle-deep water and set up an easel facing the historic casino. He wanted to paint the aftermath of the hurricane. “I love the contrast of nature and buildings, building things where they shouldn’t be, watching what happens,” he said.
