Take a look back at the photos that stood out from last week’s stories, as captured by Tampa Bay Times photographers.

Sometimes the best photos happen before the game begins. Times photographer Ivy Ceballo has a sharp eye for moments that break from the norm, like this point of view of Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz during batting practice – his eye on the ball.

Students went back to school last week and Times photographers documented the scenes throughout Tampa Bay. These photographs are taken every year. It’s a welcome challenge to try new things like using a slow shutter as students shuffle by on their way to class.

Students make their way to classes on the first day of school at Angeline Academy of Innovation Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023 in Land O' Lakes. The magnet school will service approximately 855 students grades 6-10 eventually opening to approximately 1,660 students grades 6-12.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers played a preseason opener against the Steelers on Friday. Veteran photographer Douglas R. Clifford captured all the action, but even a lackluster performance can’t tamper all the joy, as shown here.

The Doggy Swim Day event at Fossil Park in St. Petersburg is easy pickings as far as cute photos go. Times photo intern Chloe Trofatter captured delightful moments.

This photo shows tiny bundles floating in a tank inside a dark room. It was taken by the light of a headlamp with a red light so it wouldn’t interfere with the corals spawning at the Florida Aquarium’s labs in Tampa, where scientists are working to fight the bleaching crisis.
