Netflix’s ‘MerPeople’ features Weeki Wachee Springs and Tampa Bay mermaids

The new four-part series tackles the ups and downs of the “half-billion dollar mermaiding industry.”

If you’ve ever dreamed of having a tail instead of legs and spending your days underwater, Netflix’s latest documentary series is for you.

“MerPeople,” a four-part series from director Cynthia Wade, features mermaid performers and enthusiasts around the United States. Of course, there is a strong Tampa Bay tie.

According to Netflix, “MerPeople” revolves around a handful of aquatic storylines within the “half-billion dollar mermaiding industry.”

There’s Mertailor Eric Ducharme, who built a business crafting custom mermaid tails inspired by his childhood visits to Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

The Blixunami, a “nonbinary merm,” shares their journey of turning a childhood fascination into a growing career.

Another subject is Morgana Alba, a pro mermaid who founded Circus Siren Pod and is focused on educating folks on safety during underwater performances.

And performer Brittany Sparkles reveals the life of a “landlocked mermaid,” finding a way to shine underwater despite being based in Arkansas.

Especially exciting for Tampa Bay viewers: The series features Weeki Wachee Springs’ 75th anniversary celebration. There are also appearances from retired local mermaids.
